Failed inbox

Projects the agent stopped at a gate, waiting for a human to make the call.

URL/h/[slug]WhoSigned-in organizersFind itInbox button in the hackathon's top bar, on every page once judging starts

When the agent fails a project on a gate criterion, a person should make the final call. The failed inbox is where you make it. You either agree with the agent and keep the project out, or disagree and put it back in the pool. It opens as a drawer from the Inbox button in the top bar, so you can check it from any page of the hackathon.

What a failed gate does#

A gate is a pass/fail criterion that a project has to pass. When the agent fails a project on one, the failure counts straight away and stands until someone overturns it. Until then the project:

  • ranks below every project that passed, in the running phase and in the final ranking
  • can't win an award

The project stays in its phase and in the running. When the phase closes, it's ranked after every project that passed, so it only advances if there's room. The failed step is also flagged for a person on the project page and under Needs a person on Progress.

The Inbox button#

The button appears once judging has started and there's something in the inbox. A count on it shows how many projects are waiting for a call.

A project waits in the inbox when the agent failed it on a gate, it's still in the running, and nobody has decided on it yet. Projects that were eliminated or disqualified some other way don't wait for a call.

Make a call#

Open the inbox and stay on the To decide tab. Each card shows:

  • the project's number, name and pitch. The name links to the project's agent review.
  • the agent's score
  • each gate it failed, with the agent's reasoning. If you overrode a gate step to a fail on the project page, the card says Overridden to a fail and shows your reason instead.

Then pick one:

ButtonResult
Disagree — back in the poolThe gate failure is cleared. The project ranks on its scores like any other, can advance and can win awards.
Agree — keep it outThe failure stands. The project ranks below every project that passed and can't win an award.

Both ask you to confirm, and both take an optional Note for the audit trail. When you agree, you can also switch on Eliminate it now to take the project out of the running and out of judges' queues straight away. Leave it off and the project stays in its phase and ranks last.

Every call is logged in the project's audit trail, naming the gates that failed.

Undo a call#

The Decided tab lists every call, newest first, with a badge showing the outcome:

  • Overturned · back in the pool
  • Upheld · kept out
  • Upheld · eliminated

Each entry shows when the call was made and any note. Undo sends the project back to To decide, and the agent's failure counts again until someone decides. If the call eliminated the project, undoing it reinstates the project, unless its phase has already closed.

A call is also cleared on its own when the verdict it was about changes. That happens when the agent reviews the project again, or when you override the gate step so every gate passes.

Who reviews the inbox#

Choose who handles gate failures with Agent-failed inbox in Distribution. You can change it only while Agent first is on.

SettingWhat happens
You, the hackathon owner (the default)Failures wait in the inbox for your call.
A judgeFailures wait in the inbox, and the drawer names that judge as the one who reviews them. You can still decide.
Nobody — drop themFailures stand without a call. They don't count as waiting, so the Inbox button doesn't show them.

Like the rest of Distribution, this setting locks once judging starts.

Gates judges fail

The inbox only covers the agent's verdicts. When judges fail a project on a gate, the project page and Progress show it as gate flagged or ruled out, depending on the failed-gate rule in Distribution.
