Schema

The fields every project submission has: repo, demo video, team and anything else you ask for.

URL/h/[slug]/setup/schemaWhoSigned-in organizersFind itSetup › Schema

The schema decides what entrants hand in: a repo, a demo video, a team list, a written overview, or anything else you need. Each field is a block. The submission form, the intake API, project pages and the agent all read from the same list, and the order here is the order on the form.

Set the schema up before projects come in. Once judging starts, most of it locks.

What you start with#

Every new hackathon starts with six blocks. Edit, reorder or remove any of them.

BlockTypeExpected
TitleTextShort and memorable
DescriptionTextOne sentence
VideoVideo≤ 3 min
ImagesImageUp to 5 images
OverviewLong textThe full project story
GitHubRepoAgents can clone this

Block types#

TypeWhat entrants enter
TextOne line of text.
Long textSeveral paragraphs in a larger text box.
NumberA number.
URLOne link, such as a live demo.
VideoOne link to a demo video.
RepoOne link to the code repository.
FileLinks to files, one per line.
SelectOne short answer in a single-line input.
ImageLinks to images, one per line.
TeamTeam members, one per line.

A few rules apply to every submission, whether it comes from the form or the API:

  • Link fields (URL, Video, Repo) take a single link with no spaces. A link typed without https:// gets it added.
  • List fields (File, Image, Team) take up to 50 entries.
  • Number fields reject anything that isn't a number.

Add and edit blocks#

Add a block#

Hover the gap between two blocks and click + to pick a type and insert it there. Click add block at the bottom of the list to add a Text block at the end.

Fill in the drawer#

A new block opens in a drawer on the right. Click any existing block to open it the same way.

Put blocks in order#

Drag a block by its grip handle. On a phone, use the up and down arrows instead.

Click Update#

Changes aren't saved until you click Update in the page header. Until then the header shows Unsaved changes.

The drawer has four fields:

FieldWhat it does
TitleThe field's label on the form. Required, up to 120 characters.
TypeOne of the types above.
DescriptionShown to entrants under the field, so they know what to provide. Up to 2,000 characters.
ExpectedWhat a good answer looks like. Entrants see it beside the field's label, and the agent reads it when it checks each submission. Up to 2,000 characters.

To remove a block, click the trash icon in the drawer footer and confirm Remove block. Entrants stop seeing the field, and criteria that read it stop using it once you click Update.

Titles are API keys

The intake API names each field after its block's title, so a block called GitHub repo takes the key github_repo. Renaming a block renames its key. If a script sends projects to the API, update it after a rename.

The project's name#

The schema has no fixed name field. Instead, the first Text block in form order is the project's name. It's the one required field on the submission form, and the app uses it wherever it names a project: lists, judges' queues and emails. The next Text or Long text block becomes the project's one-line pitch. In the starter schema, those are Title and Description.

Tip

If you add a Text block above your name block, the new block becomes the name. Keep the name as the first Text block.

A project with no name shows as its number, such as Project #007.

How criteria read blocks#

Each criterion picks the blocks it reads on its Inputs tab, so a repo block can feed a sandbox run and a video block the video reviewer. See Criteria.

The agent sorts links by what they point at, not only by the block they came in. A GitHub link in a URL block still gets read as a repo, and a YouTube, Vimeo or Loom link in a URL block still gets treated as a video.

After judging starts#

Only titles can change

Projects were submitted against this schema, and the agent checks them against it. Once judging starts you can still rename blocks, but you can't add, remove, reorder or retype them, or edit Description and Expected. To change those, reset judging from Progress first.
